We sat across from each other in the booth at our place, there was noise everywhere around, yet the silence hung between us, so thick you could feel it. My head was down, but my eyes were looking up at him through the hair that had fallen in front of my eyes, I didn't bother to move it out of the way, I liked the way it it hid me. He was looking down at the table, finger moving absentmindedly around the rim of his water glass. We both knew what needed to be said, but neither one wanted to be the one to say it. We had been putting it off for far too long, but it wasn't the easiest thing to do. It's hard to admit you'd been wrong for as long as we had, but we were only making it worse. The waitress came with our food, I don't know what I was thinking when I ordered, there was no way I'd be able to eat. We both sat up to move out of her way, I faked a smile and a thank you, but he didn't even bother. She was unnervingly perky, or maybe it was just my mood that made her seem that way. She caught the tone though, and quickly made her exit, only coming back twice for the rest of our stay, once to refill our drinks, and once to bring boxes and the tag. As I had suspected, I didn't actually eat anything. I didn't keep it when I got home either, it seemed like the worst keepsake, it went straight into the trash, poetic in a sense.
I watched him pick at his salad with a fork, for what seemed like twenty minutes, not even realizing, til I looked down, that I had been swirling a fry in ketchup for so long that it was red through and through. We both managed a couple bites, but I think that was only as an excuse, you can't talk when you have your mouth full. It didn't last long, the food didn't taste good, I couldn't really taste it at all really, and it only made me feel more uncomfortable, if anything, dropping into my stomach like a rock. "So..." He was the first one to break the silence, it took me by surprise, but I don't think I showed it. I looked at him, I mean really looked at him for the first time since we'd gotten there, all I could do was nod. The silence sat there again, it showed on his face and I know the tears in my eyes showed on mine. He threw money on the table, saying that he wanted to treat me one last time, then pushed himself up. "You've got big things coming in your future, don't forget about me ok?" Those were the last words he spoke to me, and I couldn't find the voice to tell him I wasn't the only one. When he got to the door, he flashed me that smile I loved so much, one more time, and then just like that, five years of my life was gone.
